Special Education in St. Patrick's BNS

Special Education is an integral part of life in St. Patrick's BNS.

Our school has a strong tradition of supporting pupils with special educational needs.

In keeping with our ethos, and working collaboratively with the entire staff, the Special Education Teachers (SETs) endeavour to support children with special educational needs (SEN) to reach their full potential academically, socially, physically and emotionally, within an inclusive and safe school environment.

Currently we have 7 Special Educational Teachers. Some children are further supported with access to an SNA (Special Needs Assistant). Currently we have 8 SNAs in St. Patrick's BNS.

Teaching support and intervention may be offered in a number of ways:

  • classroom support by the class teacher
  • 'team teaching' support or in-class support where the SET supports the class teacher in the mainstream setting
  • withdrawal to a small group setting
  • withdrawal on a 1:1 basis (in consultation with the pupil and parent(s)/guardian(s))

Our SEN Policy was updated in 2018 to reflect the 'New Model of Allocation for Special Educational Needs'

The 'New Model' emphasises that schools will use the 'Continuum of Support' framework so that children with the highest level of need get the highest level of support.
